• Rethinking Community-Facilities Zoning
15 Nov 2005 at 10:16am
With its handsome housing stock, lavish parkland covering one-fourth of its land, trains and subways plunging deep into the borough, and a dozen universities and colleges, the Bronx was built for density, upward mobility, and hope. It even has a neighborhood named Mount Hope, right above the equally aspirational Mount Eden. As a borough of hills and valleys and cliffs, it has many neighborhoods named for heights: Fordham Heights, University Heights, Morris, Kingsbridge.
• Study recommends 10 p.m. parking meters
15 Nov 2005 at 9:12am
Manchester -
Meters in effect until 10 p.m., premium-priced Elm Street parking rates, a $110 million parking garage and a city parking czar are among the 39 recommendations pitched last night to improve downtown parking.
Several of the ideas drew criticism, especially one to stretch metered parking, now in effect until 8 p.m, to 10 p.m.
Robin Comstock, head of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said people who visit downtown Manchster at night to dine or for entertainment choose from among Boston, Portsmouth and other destinations. Perception is key, she said.

Meet Your Hosts
It was in the late eighties, when Del and Lori Crowder and their daughter Conni and Walt Huffman were at an Alaskan resort around a frozen lake. They looked at the resort they had paid a big price to stay and noticed the many things they would change if it were their resort. "It was kind of a dump, and we saw a lot of things we would do different," Connie said. "It just sort of evolved from there."
Their conversation carried on and turned into a desire for both couples to own some sort of resort or campground. "At first we didn't know what we wanted," Conni said.
• Kudos, teachers need a union, book review & bird flu
15 Nov 2005 at 9:10am
Gary Davis of Highgate pretty much answered his own question about why teachers need a union (Nov. 12 letters). Without a union, the situation for teachers would be the same as it was 30 years ago. His salary numbers are a little skewed though; a teacher with 5 years’ experience does not necessarily make “far more than $45,000” a year.
Because of union contracts, a teacher’s salary is based on education and years in the profession. Every teacher I work with works far more than 180 days per year. Obviously, Mr.

Victoria News

Ukrainian dance choreographer Mykola Kanevets can't wait to bring his show to Victoria.
Not only does he want to thrill audiences with the 50-member dance troupe, he just wants to escape Alberta's cold weather.
"Sometimes it's too much," said Kanevets in a thick Ukrainian accent from his office in Edmonton, which has already seen a fair number snowflakes in the last few days. "We hope you will have good weather so we can enjoy it too."
Kanevets is coming to Vancouver Island's rainy, yet warmer, climate this weekend as part of Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company's eight city tour.
• Disagreement puts Shortlist Prize on hold
15 Nov 2005 at 9:08am
NEW YORK (AP) - In its four-year history, the Shortlist Music Prize has become a coveted industry honor, shining a spotlight on artists who have made exceptional albums that have fallen under the mainstream radar.
But its future remains in doubt as its creators wrangle over the future of the organization.
Usually held in Los Angeles in the fall, there will be no Shortlist prize this year. Instead, co-founder Tom Sarig has a new award to replace it: the New Pantheon, which, like the Shortlist, will be determined by an eclectic jury of musicians, performers and journalists.

The Independent View by Dan MacDonald
IGC 2005 Impressions (November 12,
2005)
It's early October again and that means one thing, the annual pilgrimage to the Indie Games Convention (IGC). This years show is sponsored by the usual lineup: "Playfirst",
"Oberon", and "Microsoft Casual Games." It's interesting to see how hard the distribution channels and publishers work to be involved in the indie community. It reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend some time back.
