18-year-old mayor?
13 Nov 2005 at 5:17pm

Can it be true? A 19-year-old mayor? The youngest mayor known in US history? It’s true and it happened in Hillsdale, Michigan. On Wednesday, according to USA Today writer Wendy Koch in her article “‘Go-getter,’ 18, ousts mayor in Michigan,” Michael Sessions, a high school senior in Hillsdale, won the mayoral race as a write-in candidate. Sessions beat incumbent mayor Doug Ingles, age 51. Sessions, according to his high school’s economics teacher, “was a real go-getter during his campaign,” acting like “he was running for president.” He used $700 of summer-job earnings to fund his door-to-door campaigning. Is this for real? Yes. Sessions will be sworn in on November 21. He will fulfill his duties after school and will set up an office at his home. Hillsdale, with a population of 9000, elected Sessions with the notion of wanting “new energy.”
Barely legal, what do Sessions parents think of this situation? At first, apparently, they were quite skeptical. Now, that he has won, they are very supportive and encourage him in doing what he wants to do as mayor. What about the 51-year-old incumbent whom Sessions defeated? Reportedly very happy for Sessions, ex-mayor Ingles will continue to run his roller-skating rink in Hillsdale.
Ironically, Sessions is not the first teenage mayor in US history. Two other teens have been reportedly elected mayor for much smaller towns. In 2002, both Jeffrey Dunkel of Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania and Chris Portman of Mercer, Pennsylvania were sworn in as mayors, both 19-years-old.
I chose this article because I thought it was interesting how something like this could actually happen. Of course it would never happen in a big city like Los Angeles or San Diego; however, it was entertaining to read about.
The article can be found at http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-11-09-kid-mayor_x.htm.

Wicked Lovemaking - Two Sons, Two Lovers Chapter V When I awoke, it was almost
10 o'clock, and I was amazed at how long I had slept. I checked John and Tim's
rooms and saw they were gone. John worked on a ranch a few miles away, and Tim
had a summer-job in town at a supermarket. I took a shower and fixed myself up.

Twenty three years ago
27 Oct 2005 at 12:49am

This one’s special to me….

On October 26, 1982, I was 6’2” and all of 145 pounds (no, that’s not a typo).

On October 26, 1982, there was a pretty blonde who sat next to me in my high-schol English class, who had a great tush but a bad hairstyle. Of course, she thought that I was “cute” but also was “a smarta$$”. (I know, what are the odds?)

On October 26, 1982, I was sitting in my high-schol English class telling my cousin – who sat in front of me – that there was a new addition to my family.

I recall most of this because the pretty blonde soon thereafter got a new hairstyle (which – along with the tush, which I cannot overemphasize – literally blew me away), decided that I was more “cute” than “smarta$$” (still open for debate) and later became my wife – and we annually recall her remembering my discussion with my cousin because the new addition to my family was my first nephew. I was 15 at the time & so I was on cloud nine as I walked around the small high-school & bragged about my new status as “uncle”. Over the years, “uncle” gave way to the “uncle Rick-Rick” nickname that my nephew soon uttered. Soon thereafter, other nieces and nephews adopted the name given by my first nephew when he was a little over one year old, and that’s what they still call me in 2005. To be honest, I’d have it no other way.

As that first nephew – son of my older brother (bro) – started to grow he became the apple of my parents’ eye, as most “first grandchildren” often are. We didn’t have much: lived in a small house, got by on little money, did little travel, but that child was never wanting for a good spoiling. Every trip to the store brought back a toy or a book, or both. Soon, even I would start spending my summer-job money on knick-knacks for him, as I was just as attached to the little fella as his grandparents. Along the way, some fantastic memories have been burned into my brain – and that’s what life is all about, isn’t it? Memories?

His first trip to Disney World & meet-up with Mickey? I was there with him.

His first ride on the “Dumbo” attraction behind the Magic Kingdom (which was all he wanted to do)? With me.

His first steps? Not to his parents (both of whom were working), not to his grandparents. To me…in the living room, from the end-table to my arms. I remember it as though it were yesterday.

His old Teddy Ruxpin audio cassette? I still have it for sentimental reasons.

My old college fraternity shirt with “Rick-Rick” sewn in the back, which every girl at college was crazy about because they knew the story? Still in storage at my house, never to be disgarded.

That nephew, Chris, or as we’ve always known him, “Christopher”, will always have a special place in the heart of yours truly. You see, as my girlfriend became my wife and my baby nephew became a young boy and brother, I even decided that it would be perfect “training” for my future-wife and myself if we kept him (and his brother) for weekends at a time. That “training” gave my brother and his wife a “free” weekend without worrying about kids as well has provided me & my wife with some on-the-job training at what it’s like to be a parent. Some of the stuff you can’t learn from a book, it’s gotta be experienced. Along the way, I’ve learned what it’s like to have a kid “slide” down a steep flight of stairs – on his butt, hard enough to know that he was going to have multiple bruises…harmless until you realize that he was going back to his mother after the weekend – turn around and grin & say “I want to do that again”. I learned how to handle a nine year-old who turns around to tell you that the spanking “didn’t hurt”. I learned how to treat a kid with a bee-sting, busted lip, hurt pride, good grades, bad grades, ups & downs, you name it. That child was my doorway to becoming a parent & my wife & I loved every mili-second of it. And to think that my brother thought he was getting the good-end of the bargain!

Soon, that boy turned into a young man and like most young men he became more interested in other things than going to visit with his uncle. As you can see from the pictures, finding other hobbies wasn’t a problem. The guy had girls throwing themselves at him. It was quite an awakening to take him out to eat when he was seventeen and have three separate girls – complete strangers – walk up and interrupt so they could hit on him (things sure changed since I was 17). Eventually he became BMOC at his high school and served as resident football-stud on a playoff bound team. Ah, the days of sitting in a freezing stadium watching a playoff game while he grabbed a 225 lb running back with one hand – while pushing aside a blocker with the other – and collar-tackling the guy for a loss. I was there when he walked off the field in tears as his team lost later and he realized that he’d played his last football game…being a former basketball player, I know exactly how that feeling aches and tells you that your youth is fleeting, and it ain’t good.

Now, that little baby whose diapers I changed back when I was the BMOC is serving our country as a fighting Marine in our armed forces. Here are some pictures from when he was home for leave back in February:

He serves in the infantry and special-ops unit, preserving our freedom and our safety. Since he’s a Marine & in the infantry, that does not mean that the military calls on him when they want to be diplomatic or when they want to play footsie with an interviewee, that means they call on him to kill the bad guys. What he does, he can’t tell us. He can’t even discuss many of the missions that he’s undertaken due to national security reasons (and no, they don’t play the “promise not to tell anyone, okay? Allright, here goes…” game). Since he’s been inducted in the service he’s been to, among other countries, the Phillipines, North Korea, China and Indonesia. Ask yourself where you think the worldwide terrorist cells are most likely located & where you’d like special-ops teams to carry out missions, look at where he’s been and do the math yourself. [true story, as told to me by my brother: they’re eating dinner while Chris was on leave and Chris was goofing around and said something inappropriate in front of his mother, so my brother – who is around 6’ and 230 pounds – said “Chris, I can still spank that a$$ if you get outta line, son”, to which Chris raised his head & fixed an I-can-break-your-neck glare on his dad and replied “no, you can’t, any more”]

Now, Chris is stationed in California and is slated to go to Iraq next year.

Now, Chris’ Uncle Rick-Rick thanks God that he has such a brave nephew serving our country.

Now, Chris’ aunt wishes that he were here so he could see us sing him “happy birthday” instead of hearing it on a cell phone.

And now, my oldest nephew – and hero – is twenty-three years old.

On a recent trip home I was fortunate enough to ask him a few questions that he could answer:

RW: What does your unit think about the war?

CW: We all want to be the one who takes down the bad guys.

RW: Does that mean you, and they, support what’s going on?

CW: We don’t talk about….we don’t care about discussing…the politics of why or how we’re there. We’re trained to do a job and we all want to do that job. Some of us are trained to kill terrorists or soldiers and there are terrorists over there right now killing people and so we all want to go over there and kill them. You have to realize this is what we do. We know that most of the guys serving are Republicans, but that doesn’t matter, we want to get over there and finish the job.

RW: So you mean each of you guys wants to be the one to take out Zarqawi or Bin Laden like most of us want to be the ones to “bring in the big account” at work?

CW: Exactly. That’s what the government trained us to do and we can’t wait to get over there and do it instead of doing other training or guarding sites, not that those things aren’t important, but we all want to take out the big target.

RW: Last question, and I mean it seriously: how many different ways have they really trained you so that you could kill me with your bare hands?

CW: Every way. And I also know how to get rid of your body so that it’s never found and that it’s never traced back to me, too.

RW: Really?

CW: Really.

To the nonsensical leftist anti-war blowhards: stick that in your “chickenhawk pipe” and smoke it.

Marine. Infantry. Special Ops. Chickenhawk THAT.

On October 26, 1982, I welcomed my first nephew into the family.

On October 26, 2005 I get to tell my not-so-little-any-more hero:

Happy Birthday, Chris.

I first e-mailed Jay about Chris’ trip home back in February and I’ve started & then restarted and then put aside this entry until now because I didn’t want to mess it up with political mumbo-jumbo (boy, some of those “chickenhawk” people can be sooooooo arrogant), so I thought this was the best occasion to place it here. So, I’ve basically sat on this for 9 months while deciding on the best way to present it so that I wouldn’t smear it with partisan sniping – even though I really mean the part about the pipe & smoking it – so to everyone in any comments section who has ever mouthed-off about my lack-of-service (they wouldn’t take me if I tried), I’ve kept my mouth/fingers shut and hadn’t discussed his service until now out of deference to basic logic & a deference towards my nephew.

*Updated to reflect the entire interview (cut and paste didn’t work).

'Do you want something: a coffee, a bagel, a soda?'
14 Sep 2005 at 1:52am

Hoy Laura estaba solita en el

English Reader

Y no estuve tan mal.

If you want to fight, a war you'll have!.

I'm bidding on these (and his rear mat).

I think (!) that the rail fitting is a fairly simple job. If I recall from a very early post many months ago, it's a simple matter of prising out the existing trim, then cutting this trim down to length and bolting the rails on with 2 screws
