If free goody bags were the hook, Illinois Youth Soccer officials hope coaches, parents and players got lasting lessons in injury prevention and risk management at a soccer expo Saturday.
The one-day event at the Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights drew nearly 100 people before doors even opened, officials said, and nearly 2,000 over the course of the day.
Coaches, parents and administrators attended free sessions on everything from preventing ACL injuries, concussions, and sports dentistry, to sports nutrition and how to improve speed and agility.

Authors of the study,
"A Rose by Any Other Name? Objective Knowledge, Perceived Knowledge,

Fights, abuse spill over into school
Thursday, 10 March 2005
VIOLENCE in the community is starting to spill over into school, a local principal warned this week.
Collie Senior High School principal John Tuffin said a youth had been threatened with a screwdriver at the skatepark and youths had been taunted with racial slurs.
He said fights and other anti-social behaviour had spilled over into the school and community efforts had started to resolve the problems.
"The issues mainly stem around name calling, verbal abuse (often of an extremely obscene nature) and serious threats," he said.
"All these things lead to fights and tensions.
• Pakistan's antidote to extremism: first arts school

The new National Academy of the Performing Arts (NAPA), opened on Feb. 1 by President Musharraf, has set itself a daunting task: to reawaken a tradition of music, theater, and dance, and by extension, to open up free expression.
Pakistan, like many parts of the Muslim world, is ambivalent about the visual and performing arts. Some staunchly conservative Muslims feel the arts border on blasphemy and take one's mind off of God. But others say artistic expression is a crucial safety valve for social frustrations that extremists like Osama bin Laden exploit for their own purposes.

CTIA, which represents major wireless companies such as Cingular Wireless and Nextel Communications, said it was developing guidelines that would also call on carriers to classify content either as available to users of all ages or restricted to those at least 18 years old.
"The current timeline aims for adoption of the guidelines and announcement of the industry-wide agreement in the second quarter of 2005, with implementation of the guidelines by the end of 2005," CTIA President Steve Largent said.
CTIA's board of directors is expected to consider the guidelines soon. The plan would also include an education campaign.
